Routine Dental Cleanings & Exams in Cheektowaga, NY
The foundation of a healthy smile is regular dental cleaning and exams. While you may have your at-home oral healthcare routine down, it’s important not to forget to visit the dentist every six months for your standard dental check-up. These appointments ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy so you can continue to show off a confident smile.
One of the main purposes of a professional dental cleaning is the plaque and tartar removal. Your dental hygienist will use a tool called a scaler to scrape away any plaque and tartar that has built up around your gum line or in between your teeth. Tartar is the hardened form of plaque that can only be removed by a dental professional. To finish your dental cleaning, we’ll polish your teeth, which makes it harder for plaque to accumulate, and then floss your teeth.
If you are at risk for periodontal disease, or currently have periodontal disease, we may need to perform a dental deep cleaning and see you more often than the recommended biannual visits. Our team will be sure to discuss this with you if that’s the case for you.
Comprehensive Dental Exams
Once your dental hygienist has finished with your teeth cleaning, either Dr. Clauser or Dr. Al-hammali will come in to perform a comprehensive dental exam. This is when we assess whether there are any signs of oral health problems. We’ll look for cavities as well as swelling, redness, or deep pockets in your gums, which can indicate periodontal disease. We’ll also check how your upper and lower teeth fit together as this can affect the way you chew.
Another important part of a comprehensive dental exam is the oral cancer check. We’ll take a look at your tongue, the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, and your neck to see if there are any abnormalities that may signal oral cancer. Early detection means increasing your chances of successful treatment!
During your dental exam and cleaning, you are more than welcome to ask our team any questions you have about your oral health or our dental procedures. We are happy to provide our professional recommendations for everything from the best way to brush at home to what products to use to what treatments can get you to your dream smile.Contact Us
